DuJuan Harris to sign autographs at 'Cardinal Spring Splash'
A Packers player will lend his time to help a Sun Prairie school raise funds for to equip the pool.
DuJuan Harris of the Green Bay Packers will sign autographs at the "Cardinal Spring Splash" Sun Prairie High School swim team fundraiser Thursday.
Splash event organizer Cindy Ulsrud said the event will be more relaxed than typical celebrity signings; she said bringing Harris in was an idea to give attendees a bit more benefit for helping the swim team.
"In talking about the event, we thought, ‘We really need more to give people a little bit more bang with your buck when you buy a ticket,'" Ulsrud said.
Through connections, Ulsrud said she and co-organizer swim coach Nancy Harms were able to get Harris involved, which provides "a real-life little bonus for people attending," Ulsrud added.
In addition to an opportunity to meet the Packers running back, attendees at the 21-and-older Spring Splash will be served hors d’vours and receive a drink with their ticket. Ulsrud said a silent auction featuring about 100 items will take place until 8 p.m. A live auction with about 10 items -- including a scooter -- will begin after, Ulsrud said.
The money raised will be used to buy a record board to be permanently installed at the school’s pool, as well as for adding bleachers to increase seats from 240 to more than 400, Ulsrud said. The bleachers will also be adapted to integrate wheelchairs, she said.
Ulsrud, whose daughter is a freshman swimmer at SPHS, said the record board and added bleachers are needed because they were not initially planned when the school built the pool. The team hopes to buy a board right away; the bleacher upgrade is more of a two-year project, Ulsrud said.
"My hope is that we’ll raise enough money for our record board and get a really good start at raising some money for the bleachers too," she said.
Harris will sign an item for ticket-holders for free from 6-7:30 p.m. Items like mini helmets or footballs will be available for a cost, Ulsrud said.
"We're very, very excited that [Harris] would make the trip up [from his home in Florida] to help us," Ulsrud said.
As of Friday afternoon, Ulsrud said about 70 of the original 180 tickets were still available.
