Water Wagon pours H2O at area schools | Health
As part of an effort to encourage healthy habits for kids, the city's "Water Wagon" will make stops at five Madison elementary schools in the next two weeks.
Madison Water Utility is taking its water unit to Chavez Elementary, Huegel Elementary, Van Hise Elementary and Marquette Elementary. The tour kicked off last week with a stop at Muir Elementary, the city said.
The Water Wagon tour is meant to promote healthy choices, like staying hydrated, as part of a challenge to students over two weeks to walk or bike to school, also called the Walk or Wheel Challenge.
According to Public Health Madison & Dane County, schools in Madison and Sun Prairie will host a variety of events to include prizes for classes with more kids walking or biking to school, a "Walking School Bus," the FIT2GO van and the Water Wagon. The Walking School Bus activity will have an adult leading a group of kids to school.
Other schools taking part in the health challenge with other planned activities are the Madison Waldorf School, Sun Prairie's Creekside Elementary, Prairie View Middle School, Northside Elementary, Patrick Marsh Middle School and Horizon Elementary.
The events are put on with help from a combination of organizations including Safe Kids Madison Area, Madison Metropolitan School District, Public Health Madison & Dane County, Wisconsin Bike Fed, Dane County Obesity Prevention Collaborative and the Madison School & Community Recreation.
The Water Wagon will be at the following events:
- Wednesday, Oct. 9, Chavez Elementary School at 3502 Maple Grove Dr.
- Friday, Oct. 11, Huegel Elementary School at 2601 Prairie Rd.
- Wednesday, Oct.16, Van Hise Elementary School, at 4747 Waukesha St.
