A program started by the Sun Prairie Action Resource Coalition was able to provide snacks to all seven Sun Prairie elementary schools and Prairie Phoenix Academy to help fight hunger during summer school this year, according to a release.
The SnackSmart program was launched last spring with financial help from local residents and businesses, according to the release. The group plans to increase the amount of snacks delivered for the 2013-14 school year through a fundraising campaign.
According to district officials, the program fills a vital need in Sun Prairie schools.
Educators, principals and social workers have told program organizers that snacks are needed in even greater numbers than provided this spring at all schools, and that high school and middle schools face the same challenges in addressing student hunger, according to the release.
