Sheriff offers boating classes in Sun Prairie, Verona, Stoughton

The Dane County Sheriff's Department is offering multiple classes this summer throughout the area teaching boater safety. 

Two classes will be held in Stoughton, one beginning May 24 and another beginning June 8; the class in Sun Prairie is scheduled to begin May 18; and the Verona class begins July 8. 

Sheriff spokeswoman Elise Schaffer said lack of education was considered a factor in many of the 87 boating accidents last year. 

The classes are open to beginning and experienced boaters, Schaffer said Wednesday. The minimum age to attend is 10 and there is a $10 fee due the first day of class.

Planning committee votes to support Ashley Field, awaits board input

The Sun Prairie School Board’s Planning Committee formally reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining Ashley Field as the high school's centralized competition field and outlined necessary steps needed to move forward with creating a formal improvement plan during a regular meeting Monday.

Verona hockey defeats Sun Prairie

Verona hockey defeats Sun Prairie

The Verona boys hockey team is ranked second in the state and the Wildcats renewed its Big Eight rivalry with Sun Prairie Thursday night at the Eagles Nest.

This time it was an elimination game and the Wildcats got the first score at the mark. 

Verona's Brogan Baker picked his spot up top and snapped the puck in for the goal, making the score 1-0. 

Verona won 6-1. 

Verona will play Monona Grove Tuesday.

New arena features NHL-size ice rinks, other amenities

A new two-sheet ice arena will open next weekend in Sun Prairie, according to a release.

There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 17 and then a grand opening event from 5-10 p.m. on Jan. 18, organizers said. Both events are free and open to the public.

The grand opening event will include open skating on both rinks, tours of the facility, door prizes, a silent auction, hockey and figure skating demonstrations, face painting and more, according to the release.

The 94,000 square-foot ice arena features 14 locker rooms, 2 concession stands, a skate rental room, a dance studio, meeting rooms and a family lounge, according to the release. It also features two NHL-size ice surfaces with seating available for more than 1,000 spectators in the Cardinal Rink and 600 in the Tubbs Rink.

Div. 1 Cross Country: West, La Follette boys, Stoughton, Middleton girls make it to state

Div. 1 Cross Country: West, La Follette boys, Stoughton, Middleton girls make it to state

Led by senior Olin Hacker, the Madison West boys cross country team advanced to state by winning the Division 1 sectional meet in DeForest.

Hacker won the individual title with a time of 16:08. The Regents win the team title with 56 points.

Middleton took second with 110 points, winning a tie-breaker over Baraboo.

On the girls side, led by a third place finish by sophomore Samantha Valentine (14:55), the Middleton girls cross country team advanced to state with 51 Points. Sun Prairie took second with 54 points; and they also advance to state.

In Verona Stoughton's Nikki Staffen won the individual title in the girls Division 1 sectional with a time of 16:15. The Vikings also won the team title with 38 points.

Fort Atkinson took second with 99 points.
